CAVITY INSULATION REMOVAL

Professional removal of old cavity wall insulation

Existing cavity wall insulation can sometimes be damaged, contaminated, settled or technically unsuitable. Older materials such as certain UF foams can also become problematic.

Nu-Isoleren can remove existing insulation and clean the cavity. After cleaning we assess whether re-insulation with an ATG-certified Isomo EPS bead system is technically possible.

Removing old cavity wall insulation is specialist work. The material is hidden between two wall leaves and can cause problems because of ageing, moisture, settlement or poor original installation. We therefore first identify the material and the reason the existing insulation is no longer performing correctly.

Why remove old cavity wall insulation?

Removal may be necessary when existing insulation is contaminated, settled, unevenly distributed or affected by construction defects.

Depending on the existing material, the old insulation is loosened and extracted through controlled openings. The aim is to clear the cavity as completely as practical without unnecessary damage to the façade. Additional cleaning can then be carried out.

What signs can indicate a problem?

Cold areas, moisture-related issues, visible contamination during inspection or a very unevenly filled cavity may justify further investigation.

Possible signs include cold areas, moisture problems, uneven insulation, material appearing at openings or contamination inside the cavity. These signs do not automatically mean all insulation must be removed; inspection determines whether local repair, cleaning or complete removal is appropriate.

Inspect the cavity first

Before removal, we identify the material present, how it is distributed and whether contamination or obstructions are present.

Inspection helps establish the cavity build-up, contamination and condition of the existing material. Accessibility and the presence of mortar debris or other obstructions also influence the removal method.

How is cavity wall insulation removed?

The method depends on the existing material. Insulation is loosened and extracted through controlled openings with the aim of clearing the cavity as thoroughly as possible.

Removing old UF foam

Some older properties contain foam insulation in the cavity. Where this material has badly degraded, broken down or become problematic, removal may be required. The method depends on the material actually present.

Old UF foam can shrink, break down or remain unevenly distributed over time. When it is removed, limiting residual material is important if the cavity is intended to be insulated again afterwards.

Cleaning the cavity after removal

After removal, residue or debris can remain. We clean the cavity so that it can be properly assessed before any re-insulation.

After removal we check for remaining insulation, mortar debris and other contamination. A sufficiently clean and open cavity is important before a new insulation system is installed.

Can the cavity be insulated again?

After cleaning we reassess façade condition, cavity width, moisture and remaining contamination. If suitable, new Isomo EPS bead insulation can be considered.

If the construction is suitable after cleaning, the cavity can be insulated again. Nu-Isoleren uses EPS beads from Isomo. More information is available on our EPS insulation page.

01

Inspect and identify the cause

We determine which material is present and why removal is required.

02

Create suitable access

Work openings are provided according to the property.

03

Remove and clean

Old insulation and loose residue are removed.

04

Reassess the cavity

We check whether repair or new insulation is technically possible.

How much does cavity insulation removal cost?

Price depends on insulation type, quantity, accessibility, wall area and difficulty of removal.

Cost depends on the type of old insulation, quantity, accessibility, wall area and level of contamination. Cleaning and re-insulation are separate work stages. Request a free quotation for an assessment of your cavity.

Frequently asked questions

Answers about old insulation, UF foam, cavity cleaning, pricing and re-insulation.

When should old cavity wall insulation be removed?

Older cavity insulation can settle, deteriorate or lose effectiveness over time. Poorly installed insulation from an earlier renovation may also need to be removed. Nu-Isoleren first inspects the cavity to determine whether removal is actually necessary.

How does Nu-Isoleren remove old cavity wall insulation?

The removal method depends on the type and condition of the existing insulation. The old material is removed from the cavity so the space can be cleared as thoroughly as possible. Afterwards, we can assess whether the wall is suitable for new insulation.

Can my cavity walls be insulated again after the old insulation is removed?

In many cases, yes. Once the old insulation has been removed, Nu-Isoleren reassesses the condition of the cavity. If suitable, the wall can then be re-insulated using a modern EPS bead system.
